A sermon preached on Sunday Morning June 22, 2008 at the Bakers Creek Baptist Church by James Carl Jones pastor.

We all know the 23 Psalm and of all the scriptures that are in the bible, can be recited by both saved and unsaved alike. This Psalm is called the Shepherd’s Song or Psalm, but to me it should be called the song of the Lambs that are under the shepherd care.

One of the reasons that we come to church is to share with others what the Lord has done for us during the week. In this we can see how God can provide for those under his care, not everyone has the same problems and the Lord provides in so many different ways. So it’s important to share all his blessing he sends our way. We should always be ready to offer praise for the care and answered prayers that he has provided us his sheep.

When you stop and look at the 23 Psalm you will notice it is the lamb that is doing the praising to the shepherd for all that he has done for him or her.

Psalms 23
23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

This lamb that is speaking these words can, as well as you or I say, that we can trust the Shepherd to provide the following care for the sheep.

REST = He maketh me to lie down
PEACE = beside the still waters
HEALTH = He restoreth my soul
GUILDENCE = he leadeth me
CONFIDENCE = I will fear no evil
DEFENSE = thy rod and thy staff they comfort me
A HOME = I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

I am sure that there are other things that the lambs of the shepherd can speak out about him, but the question that I want to ask you this morning is, are you telling others that he does provide this care we have mentioned. That he is willing to bring all those who want to under this care. Have you told others about the Shepherd that watches over you? When people look at your shepherd they will see that no other shepherd will ever be able to match the good shepherd.

John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

This Shepherd has shown his love for the sheep in that he is willing and has laid down his life for them. You can say that why does this make him so special, any shepherd can do this. Where this maybe true, what shepherd is there that can give his life for the sheep and take it back up again and continue the care of the sheep. Other shepherds maybe able to give their lives for the sheep but only one shepherd has done this and return to life to continue his work.

John 10:17-18
17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

I don’t know about you but I want to be a part of a fold that has a shepherd that will always be there. He will always be there providing the care that is found in the lambs song of the 23 psalm. What shepherd is watching over you today, a shepherd that can only provide for you things as long as he lives or one that can provide lasting care?

One more point I would like to make this morning before we part. I was thinking this week about all the things that await the child of God in the future and I for one can’t wait till he comes and finish what he has started in me. The day when he calls us to him is a day that I want to come. Then I recalled the first verses of the 23 psalm and that it says

Psalms 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

But I do have wants so am I wrong to want or does this word want in the 23 Psalm mean something other then what I thought it meant.

In the UBS it reads

Psalms 23:1
"Because the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not lack anything" or "The Lord is the one who watches over me; therefore I shall have need of nothing."

I shall not want can be misleading for a person will think of wants as meaning I don’t want anything, I am content

Psalms 23:1
I shall not want: the verb means to lack, to be without, not to have (see 8:5, where the verb means "be less"). NJB and NJV have "I lack nothing"; NIV "I shall not be in want." Knox's rhetorical question is effective: "how can I lack anything?" The use in English of the verb want (RSV, NAB, NEB) can be misunderstood, since the usual meaning of "to want" is "to desire."

Another translation which bring out I SHALL NOT WANT

Psalms 23:1
THE LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and shield me], I shall not lack.

For a Christian we have wants or Desire or longings,

Paul wanted his brethren the Jews to come to Christ

Romans 10:1
Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

Romans 9:1-3
9 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:

He had a want or desire to be with his savior

Philippians 1:23
For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

On Monday June 16 in the state of California for example we had to see our country have another state join with Massachusetts that will allow the marriage of the same sexes.

The sad part of this is that in 2000 there was on ballot what was called Proposition 22,

"only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California."

61% of the people who live in California voted to pass this. Yet we see it taking place this week all because the California Supreme Court voted 4 to 3 that the people don’t know what best for their state.

I long for a world where this sin is not to be found among us.

Homosexually which the word of God forbids

Leviticus 18:22
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Leviticus 20:13
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Not only this sin, but murder and everything else that Adam brought through the fall

Revelation 21:27
And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Revelation 22:14-15
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

I want or desire the Lord to return and change this vile body that I have, this body with all its sickness and fleshly desires that we have to contend with.

Philippians 3:20-21
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

I long for the day when the last funeral is held and the last prescription is filled

Revelation 21:4
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

I want or desire the Fathers will to be carried out in the entire world

Luke 11:2
And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

I want or desire my Savior to return

2 Timothy 4:8
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

When you become a child of God, you become one who waits for certain things to become reality. One is the coming of our Lord back to this earth to call us to him and his reign from the city of Jerusalem to start

Titus 2:13
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

I want or desire the Devil to be bound and sent where he will never affect us ever again

Revelation 20:2
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

Revelation 20:10
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

So we as God children have wants

The 23 psalm deal with the shepherd taking care of the sheep’s needs in life

The psalm before this one which is the 22 psalm tell of the shepherd taking care of the lambs after life

Psalms 22:7-20
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head saying,
8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.
10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
19 But be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

And because of the shepherd dying for the sheep, he has taken care of our the life to come

John 10:11-15
11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

This is why we come together every Sunday, to offer praise to God for all that he is doing for us and will one day do.

Is he your shepherd today, have you ask God to make you one of his fold

If not, I would ask that you do it today without delay,

The Lord Jesus came to earth and took on flesh and blood,

John 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

So he could become the perfect sacrifice for you and for me.

2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

In Him lays the hope of all Mankind
